Interview with Vicente Cuñat / Entrevista con Vicente Cuñat

Vicente Cuñat, Associate Professor of the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) and alumni from the 9th class at CEMFI.

For the interview this month we talked to Vicente Cuñat. Vicente has been a professor at the LSE since 2007. His research focuses on corporate finance and industrial organization, and he has published in prestigious academic journals (American Economic Review, Review of Financial Studies, Review of Finance, Journal of Industrial Economics etc.) and has collaborated in the publication of several books. He has also participated in research projects related to entrepreneurship, risk management and the regulation of financial markets. Last year, Vicente was the Chair of the Scientific Committee of the Spanish Economic Association Symposium that took place in Girona on 10, 11 and 12 December 2015. The Symposium brings together experts in all areas of economics every year in December. The Spanish Economic Association Job Market, intended for PhD graduates in economics, also meets during the Symposium. More information: http://www.asesec.org/sae.php

Para la entrevista de este mes hemos pensado en Vicente Cuñat. Vicente es profesor de la LSE desde el año 2007. Su investigación se centra en finanzas corporativas y organización industrial, y sobre estos temas ha publicado en revistas académicas de reconocido prestigio (entre otras, American Economic Review, Review of Financial Studies, Review of Finance, Journal of Industrial Economics) y ha colaborado en la publicación de diversos libros. Además ha participado en proyectos de investigación relacionados con el emprendimiento, la gestión de riesgos y la regulación de los mercados financieros. El pasado año Vicente fue el organizador científico del Simposio de la Asociación Española de Economía celebrado en Girona los días 10, 11 y 12 de diciembre de 2015. El Simposio reúne anualmente a expertos en todas las áreas de la investigación económica y es también el foro de encuentro de nuevos doctores e instituciones en el marco del Mercado de Trabajo de Nuevos Doctores. New video about CEMFI Master and PhD in Economics

Watch Cemfi’s new video about its Master and PhD studies in Economics!

CEMFI Master and PhD are very demanding and prestigious academic programs. The programs are both taught in English by faculty that are research leaders in their fields, and they lead to official degrees of Master in Economics and Finance and PhD in Economics and Government by Universidad Internacional Menéndez Pelayo (UIMP).

The first two years are common to both programs, and involve five 10-week terms of coursework, writing a Master thesis, and an optional summer internship at the end of the first year. Class size is small: around 25 students per cohort, which facilitates the interaction between students and faculty. After the Master degree students can choose to pursue their PhD studies at CEMFI. The PhD program has an exceptional placement record in academia, government organizations and in the private sector.

Applications for admission to the Master and the PhD in Economics are open from 15 November 2015. The deadline to be eligible for funding is 15 February 2016 and the final application deadline is 31 May 2016.

Interview with Jonás Fernández / Entrevista con Jonás Fernández

Jonás Fernández Álvarez (Oviedo, 1979): alumni of the 16th cohort and president of the CEMFI Alumni Association from 2006 to 2007. 

Jonás graduated in economics from the University of Oviedo in 2001 and enrolled in the Master in Economics and Finance at CEMFI from 2002 to 2004. Much of his career was at Solchaga Recio & Associates, where he was the manager of the Research Division. He is currently a Member of the European Parliament (MEP) in the Group of the Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats:

Se licenció en Economía por la Universidad de Oviedo, en el año 2001 y cursó el máster en Economía y Finanzas del CEMFI durante los años 2002 y 2004. Esther Duflo’s Conference/ Conferencia de Esther Duflo

The Alumni Association organized a talk at CEMFI by Esther Duflo, Princess of Asturias Award for Social Sciences 2015, on “Gossip : Central Identifying Individuals in a social network”. In this work, joint with Abhijit Banerjee, Arun G. Chandrasekhar, and Matthew O. Jackson, they show that individuals can, simply by tracking sources of gossip, identify the members of a community who are best-placed to diffuse information.

Esther’s speech at the ceremony of the Princess of Asturias Awards is available here. Her speech was focused on how is possible to fight poverty and that Europe can not turn its back on the thousands of refugees arriving every day.

La Asociación de Antiguos Alumnos organizó una charla en el CEMFI a cargo de Esther Duflo, Premio Princesa de Asturias de Ciencias Sociales 2015, sobre “Gossip : Central Identifying Individuals in a social network”. En este trabajo conjunto con Abhijit Banerjee, Arun G. Chandrasekhar, y Matthew O. Jackson, muestran que los individuos pueden, simplemente mediante el seguimiento de las fuentes de cotilleos, identificar a los miembros de una comunidad mejor situados para difundir información.

El discurso de Esther en la ceremonia de entrega de los Premios Princesa de Asturias está disponible aquí. Su discurso estuvo centrado en que es posible combatir la pobreza y en que Europa no puede dar la espalda a los miles de refugiados que llegan cada día.

Interview with Teresa Dabán / Entrevista con Teresa Dabán

The Centro de Estudios Monetarios y Financieros (CEMFI) Alumni Association was legally created on January 26, 1995, thanks to the initiative of a group of alumni of CEMFI’s Master program in Economics and Finance with Teresa Dabán as head of the Association.

Teresa currently works as Resident Representative of the International Monetary Fund in Armenia. Teresa is a graduate of the second cohort of CEMFI students (1989-1990). After her studies at CEMFI she completed a Master program in Econometrics and Mathematical Economics at LSE. After returning to Spain and successfully completing the public examination process for the position of Commercial Expert and State Economist she worked for the Ministry of the Treasury from 1990 to 1999. Since 2000, Teresa has worked for the International Monetary Fund (IMF) in a diverse group of countries with emphasis in developing economies. Nowadays, she is the head of the delegation in Armenia, one of the republics from the former Soviet Union landlocked in the Southern Caucasus.

La Asociación de Antiguos Alumnos del Centro de Estudios Monetarios y Financieros (CEMFI) quedó legalmente constituida el 26 de enero de 1995, merced a la iniciativa de un grupo de antiguos alumnos del Programa de Estudios de Postgrado en Economía y Finanzas del CEMFI con Teresa Dabán al frente.

Teresa es, en la actualidad, Resident Representative del Fondo Monetario Internacional en Armenia. Teresa se graduó en la segunda promoción del CEMFI (años 1989-90). Tras su paso por el CEMFI obtuvo su Master en Econometría y Economía Matemática en la LSE y a su regreso a España empezó a trabajar en el Ministerio de Economía y Hacienda, entre los años 1990-1999, tras completar la oposición a Técnico Comercial y Economista del Estado. Desde el año 2000 trabaja en el Fondo Monetario Internacional (FMI) donde ha trabajado en un amplio conjunto de países, sobre todo economías emergentes y de frontera. En la actualidad es jefa de delegación del Fondo Monetario Internacional en Armenia, una de las repúblicas ex soviéticas del Cáucaso Sur, donde el FMI está muy implicado.
